In West Sussex there are five Register Offices where marriages can take place. These are situated in Chichester, Crawley, Haywards Heath, Horsham and Worthing.
In East Sussex you will find Registry Offices at Crowborough, Eastbourne, Hastings and Lewes.
You can get married in England and Wales as long as you have both lived in a registration district for at least seven days immediately before giving notice of marriage.
You will need to show the Superintendent Registrar documentary evidence of your:
- name
- age (the minimum legal age for getting married in England and Wales is 16 years but written consent may be required for anyone under 18 years)
- nationality (ideally in the form of your passport)
- Any change of name documents
You will also be asked to provide evidence of your address and evidence of the ending of any previous marriage or civil partnership.
You will both need to go to the registry office to give notice of your intention to marry. The notice will be displayed on the Superintendent Registrar’s notice board for 15 clear days before the certificate is issued for your marriage. The notice states where you wish to marry and is valid for 12 months.
